Abstract
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is influencing our lives at many levels. The new corona virus is not only a threat to health and life, but also to social relationships, personal and national economy, and mental health. At the same time, the pandemic is not necessarily experienced as a purely negative event, as it may also have brought about improvements in some individuals’ life conditions. Not everyone is influenced the same way by the pandemic, and there are also differences across the nations. Not surprisingly, various psychological responses have been observed over the course of the pandemic, and some of them could be lasting. Currently, much research in psychology is aiming to investigate, among other things, how the pandemic influences individuals’ values and attitudes, mental health, institutional and interpersonal trust, and behaviors such as adherence to the public health recommendations. In this talk, I will summarize what is currently know about the psychological effect of the pandemic, and present some preliminary findings from an ongoing research project in Sweden.
