On the Role of Health in the Economic and Demographic Dynamics of Brazil, 1980-1995

David Mayer 2000

Arbetsrapport 2000 nr. 4

Using probability of survival by age and gender groups as a health indicator, this paper studies the effects of health on economic and demographic dynamics of Brazil. The strongest effects of health on income occur through increased education, followed by higher productivity and lastly by increased female economic participation. Moreover, health slows the decrease of net fertility, except for high income groups, creating a developmental vicious circle.
