Stephen M. Gardiner: Contractualism and Tyranny Over Possible People

Datum: 8 december 2021
Tid: 14:00-15:45

Research seminar with Stephen M. Gardiner, Professor of Philosophy and Ben Rabinowitz Endowed Professor of Human Dimensions of the Environment/Director, Program on Ethics at the University of Washington

Abstract
Mainstream moral contractualists hold that, properly-speaking, one can only wrong actual people. In this paper, I aim to motivate and then explore an alternative approach that takes seriously the claim that merely possible people can be wronged. This approach makes sense of some key examples, and also suggests a more intuitive view on wrongful human extinction.
