Are virtual worlds "real"? Or are they merely "virtual"? In a recent book by David Chalmers, "Reality + - Virtual Worlds and the Problems of Philosophy", he argues that if we in fact were already living in a very advanced simulation (a possibility according to Chalmers) this existence would be just as "real" as reality. In this talk Anandi Hattiangadi, professor of philosophy at Stockholm University, raises some issues with Chalmers' argument. Recorded at the conference The Problems of Philosophy in VR hosted by the Institute for Futures Studies in April 2023. The conference was inspired by Chalmers' book Reality + and engaged with various philosophical problems raised by the book. This talk, as well as the whole conference, took as a starting point the new book Reality+ by philosopher David Chalmers, where he explores philosophical questions raised by virtual worlds.
