Abstract

An increasing number of very wealthy people are asking what, if anything, they should do with their wealth. This question is asked against a background of increasing concerns about the world as it is: rising wealth inequality and wealth concentration since the 1980s, multiple ecological and planetary crises, and the erosion (and in some places ending) of liberal democracies. In this paper, I ask what, in this world, the very wealthy should do. The very wealthy are a very heterogeneous group, with some doing on average more harm than good, but others genuinely wanting to do good. Among these philanthropists, effective altruism is increasingly popular. Effective altruism is an approach, grounded in moral philosophy and economics, that uses reason and evidence to determine how to do the most good. As a movement, effective altruism is highly organised and actively involved in activities that increase the number of people advancing it. But is effective altruism, as it is currently understood, what this world needs from philanthropists, or does it need something else?
