Klaus Georg Hansen: Greenland – 300 years of colonisation

Since the formal colonisation of Greenland in 1721 by the Norwegian-Danish missionary Hans Egede Greenland has experienced five 'constitutional' breaks. Thus, seven distinct colonial eras can be identified. This reveals that significant transitions took place in 1782, 1832, 1953, 1979, and 2009. Today, Greenland shows a preparedness to assume responsibility for a greater degree of independence. By contrast, Denmark does not seem to have undergone a corresponding change in discourse, and hence is not yet in a similar position to take the necessary steps to ensure that the last colonial ties between Denmark and Greenland are severed in a peaceful and equitable manner. To illustrate this, a reference to the current geopolitical situation around Greenland will be discussed briefly. Research seminar with Klaus Georg Hansen, PhD in Colonial History and modern society of Greenland. He is an independent filmmaker and researcher, and affiliated with the IT University of Copenhagen as a researcher in aspects of digital elections. He is the former head of the Interior Division of the Government of Greenland.
