Teaching Young People Democracy (Pilot Study)

The project investigates what young people are taught about democracy in schools in different Western countries. The background is that support for democracy among young people is declining and that this development seems to be more lasting than previously assumed.

The study analyses which models of democracy dominate in social studies education at upper secondary level in ten Western countries, and whether the teaching's image of democracy may contribute to young people's declining support for the basic values of democracy.

The pilot study will test whether AI tools can be used to collect, translate and analyse relevant sections from textbooks in the ten countries. The aim is to show that the data collection required for a larger research project is feasible for a future application to research funders.
