Social Democracy Lost – The Social Democratic Party in Sweden and the Politics of Pension Reform

Urban Lundberg 2005

The Swedish pension reform of the 1990s is here studied from a power-political perspective focusing on the Social Democratic Party. Despite a strong heritage in the “income security principle”, guidelines for a reformed pension system were submitted to the Parliament in broad consensus in 1994. For the social democrats, there are both claims of skillful adaption, and transcending the legacy and making them their own electoral and policy gravediggers.
