Abstract

Sweden is often seen as a model for universal healthcare — high quality, equitable, and publicly funded. Yet behind this reputation lies a system facing growing challenges: long waiting times, workforce shortages, fragmentation of care, and increasing demands from an aging population. This talk explores the structural and organizational tensions within Swedish healthcare and how they shape patient access. Drawing on research in health policy and public administration, it highlights why well-resourced systems may still struggle to deliver timely care — and what these challenges reveal about the future of healthcare governance in Sweden and beyond.
