Research seminar with Paul Levin, the Director of the Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies and Managing Director of the Consortium for European Symposia on Turkey. A frequent commentator of Turkish affairs in Swedish and international media, he is a Docent in International Relations, having received his Ph.D. in the same subject along with an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Southern California and a Fil. Kand. In Practical Philosophy from Stockholm University.

ABSTRACT

This talk will be based on a policy memo soon to be published by the Foreign Policy Research Institute – a Philadelphia-based think tank. It will thus be heavy on policy and current affairs, less so on research. The talk will address the following questions: What is the current state of play in the negotiations between Sweden, Finland, and Turkey over NATO accession? Is Finland going it alone and, if so, what would that mean for Sweden and NATO? What can Sweden do to ensure Turkish ratification? What can other NATO members who want to see both Finland and Sweden join do to speed up the process? What does the catastrophic earthquake in Turkey mean for the political process with elections scheduled for May or June, and what could it mean for Sweden’s NATO prospects?
