Gustaf Arrhenius

Tel: +46 8-402 12 27 (Executive Assistant)

I am the Director of the Institute for Futures Studies. I am also Professor of Practical Philosophy. I received my Ph.D. in philosophy from University of Toronto and my FD in practical philosophy from Uppsala University.

My research interests are primarily in moral and political philosophy, and I am especially interested in issues in the intersection between moral and political philosophy and the medical and social sciences (e.g., economics, law, and political science).

I am best known for my research on our moral and political obligations to future generations and on issues in democratic theory. My research has also concerned the structure of value and desert, measures of equality and power, and how power can be distributed fairly.

At the Institute I head the research program “Humanity’s path forward – democracy, technology, society, and future generations”. I coordinate the research projects "Climate ethics and future generations" and "Sustainable population in the time of climate change".

I have been visiting researcher at several universities and institutes, for instance University of Oxford, CNRS, l’Institut d’études avancées-Paris and Collège d’études mondiales. I am honorary professor at Aarhus University, a member of the Economics – Philosophy initiative at Paris School of Economics and a member of Academia Europaea. I previously directed the Franco-Swedish Program in Philosophy and Economics at Collège d’études mondiales in Paris and Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) in Uppsala.

I am a board member of the Swedish Agency for Health and Care Services Analysis.
