ABSTRACT

It is increasingly evident that greenhouse gas emissions and global warming pose serious existential risks to human societies. However, public concern about climate change, as well as citizens’ pro-environmental behaviors, has yet to change in order to reflect this reality. While cross-national differences in beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors suggest that societal factors play a crucial role, sociological perspectives on citizens’ environmental engagement are relatively rare. During the talk, I will present our ongoing research exploring the role of collective action problems and different forms of trust, the quality of government institutions, and political ideology, for public responses to climate change and other environmental challenges.
