Funding received for research projects about democracy and equality

Last week the institute was granted 8 million SEK by the Wallenberg Foundations for two research projects that will go on for four years.

The boundary problem in democratic theory. Gustaf Arrhenius was granted 5 170 000 SEK by Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

The focus of this project will be on one basic democratic problem: who should have a right to take part in which decisions? This “boundary problem” is a fundamental issue in democratic theory and is of both practical and theoretical import.

This project involves several researchers from different countries, some of them situated at the institute; Ludvig Beckman, Katharina Berndt Rasmussen and Ashwini Vasanthakumar.

Conflict, cooperation and equality - core drivers and essential results of cultural development in world history. Arne Jarrick was granted 3 000 000 SEK by Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation.

The aim of this project is to analyze three plausible long-term trends in human
societies: the trend towards increased social interaction and widening social networks, the
trend towards less violent social conflicts, and the trend towards a more egalitarian society.

Other researchers involved in this project are Pontus Strimling, also at the institute, Janken Myrdal and Giulia Andrighetto.
